Shitty Monday News

Readers, it is with a heavy heart that I bring you some terrible news. On Saturday afternoon, after enjoying the colorful and innovate vegetarian buffet at Woodlands in Takoma Park, I received this disturbing text message from Adventures in Unemployment:

Dude, I am at Beauty Island and they are going out of business!

My heart - no joke - stopped. Could it be? Was my favorite last-minute party accessory and one-dollar nail-polish standby with the oft-butchered name really shutting its doors? I replied immediately.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Really???????

I pocketed my phone, hoping that my comrade in blogging (and IRL) was merely experiencing the customary Blues Control-induced hallucination, having been to Comet to see them the night before. But alas:

April 20! Everything is on major sale - I just got seven pairs of tights for 3 bucks

Sigh. While the prospect of paying 43 cents for a pair of tights is one that gets me considerably stoked, I am a legitimate puddle of sadness knowing that I will no longer have a neighborhood place to buy spray-gold bamboo hoops. The rug is getting pulled out from under us just in time for hippie beach season, a spring-and-summer specific outfit vibe that is like, contingent on gilded earwear. What's a girl to do?! R. I. P., Beauty Island! I am really fucking sad you're closing!

Rant-Time

So everyone LOVES the W "Summer Camp" shoot, but why is Lara Stone topless or naked in every single photo? I feel bad for the girl, it's hardly for fashion...she's just there to show off her awesome boobs. I love awesome boobs as much as the next person, but it cheapened the shoot in my opinion.

13

Did Friday the 13th cause the power outtage and fire on the Dupont and Metro center metro stops today ? Or could it just be Metro and some of the many delays as of late? I thought winter was bad with the hair dryers and ice but apparently these delays are not seasonal. Metro, what is your major malfunction? Is the weight of the increasing ridership physically breaking the tracks? Or could it be...sabotage?

Economics of Fashion

Interesting article in Times Online about current fashion trends in these cash-poor times. Excerpt: "Buying eight T-shirts for the price of one sock holds little attraction, there is much to cherish in clothes that are original and that make us feel special." And then there is a quote from the CEO of Topshop about how people are more inclined towards "better quality." Yeah...
But mostly, I agree with what the article is saying. I see the trends being more creative and colorful and the shapes showing more freedom. I do love my blacks and beiges but lately, I cannot stop myself from hitting a thrift shop and buying the boldest colors possible. The 80's are no longer taboo, especially when you can match it up and bring old outfits to life again. When you have to stretch a dollar, do you really want to spend it on a disposable piece of clothing from H&M?

D.C. Taxis

Rant 'o the day: yesterday I heard the running of my first D.C. cab meter and it was music to my ears. Very soon those of us who live and visit here can travel to other neighborhoods without having to haggle. Case in point, I went from Adams Morgan to the BYT/Artomatic party at 1st and M NE this past weekend and was quoted everything from $10.50-$14.50 for the exact same ride. Cabs were plenty empty but I spent a good 10 minutes rejecting un-metered cabbies pulling quotes out of their ears. Hey Cabbies, it's not an auction, and we are the enemy. We are just trying to live. Many cabs will not have meters until 6/1, click here for the Post's taxi fare estimator. Hopefully, I will never have to pay $8 to travel 5 blocks again.

Real Talk

I normally love APC's casual-chic duds, but I'm gonna have to call some bullshit. Evidence: bermuda shorts, silver sack dress and pink J. Crewish shirt.
