Yum

Thanks, Flickrer Eric Carl. The book of 70s logos and typefaces that you uploaded to your account are making me freak out! (With joy, duh.)

Spring Fete

I probs don't need to tell anyone that the National Cherry Blossom Festival starts tomorrow. (Is March seriously, like, over? Jesus!) However, feel free to ignore the schedule that the Man has imposed on these trees. They've already started blooming, and they're all over the city. Save yourself the hassle of the Metro (sure to be Ninth Circle-esque on such a tourist-heavy weekend) and take a walking tour of our fair town.

Here are my other favorite Cherry Blossoms--a Nashville band that specializes in what I might describe as caveman alt-country? Maybe post-human folk? They're difficult to classify, chronologically and generically--all the more reason to click the link and have a listen. Put them on your iPod as you wander the streets in bliss.

Object Lust

Do I only love this because it's a vintage knock-off? Do I love or hate the idea of vintage knock-offs? Why does buying at American Apparel cause all sorts of moral quandries?

Boum!

Looking to do some hip-swiveling this weekend? If so, I suggest that you attend Friday's Soiree Disco at Chroma. It will be, in the words of DJ Chris Burns, "very sexy." Dress how he describes
the club: "proper with lazers." Capiche?

Please note the classic acrylic nails that the model is sporting!

You must RSVP for this event! The cover is $10.

Wake n' bake

Ugh--getting out of bed in the morning. What a horrendous activity. It's become slightly less harrowing now that the weather is lightening up, but for me, it will always be a challenge--which I why I like to give myself little things to look forward to in the morning, like Intelligenstia coffee (available at Sticky Fingers), poached eggs from any of the DC-area farmer's markets, or some deliciously inventive ginger scones from Teaism.

And, for those of us who feel-extra industrious in the morning, here's the recipe for those scones.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cake flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon dried ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut in pea size cubes
2 ounces chopped, crystallized or candied ginger
3/4 cup milk
1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 teaspoon cold water to make an egg wash

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
You can mix by hand or with a food processor or mixer, but be careful not to over blend the dry ingredients. If you over-blend, your scones will be tough and chewy. Put the 7 dry ingredients in a bowl and add the cubes of butter. With your fingers, or with 2 knives, blend the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles a coarse cornmeal. Some large pieces of butter should remain, this will make your scones light and fluffy. If you are using a processor, pulse briefly. Stir in the ginger bits. Add the milk and work quickly with a fork to incorporate. The dough should be soft and lightly moist. Again, don't over-mix. Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and gently pat down until it stands about 1/2-inch thick. Cut into 12 triangles with a dough cutter or a knife and put onto an ungreased baking sheet. Brush the tops of the scones with the egg wash and sprinkle with some sugar. Bake for 12 minutes until golden. Let cool briefly.

"Women to Watch"

Zoe Strauss makes the best pictures. I could not wait to post this item because I am so obsessed with her poetic and razor-sharp images.

One of my favorite pictures; the first one of hers that I ever saw. I am pretty sure this woman is dead now.

You can see her and ten other incredible photographresses (I am just going to go ahead and use the sexist word I made up, ok?) at the National Museum of Women in the Arts' "Women to Watch 2008" show. It runs through June 15th.

I want to post more of Zoe's pics, but I have a bus to catch... Google the names of the any of the women in this show. Prepare to get lost in a vortex of jaw-dropping photography.

When I return to DC, more images from these women; more art from my trip to Philly this weekend.

DCinema

Michael Haneke's new film "Funny Games" has been getting a lot of attention since it came out--and rightfully so. Dude rules at making movies. But don't let the hullaballoo surrounding this release distract from his excellent past work--which, lucky for us DC folks, has been playing at the Goethe Institute for the past month! Unlucky for us, the program ends on the 24th. I strongly urge you to see the final film in the series, "Variation." To be honest, I haven't seen it--which is why I will be front and center at the screening on Monday! Join me for what is sure to be a festival of heart-wrenchery.

Welcome Emily!

Welcome Emily, our newest blog poster extraodinaire! (She also happens to accomplish amazing outfits with vintage pieces and does not scoff at the Olsens' fashion sensibilities). See post below re: the sage Sartorialist.

Sartorialist at the Adamson

In honor of the Sartorialist's show at the Adamson Gallery, I am going to post some of my favorite (seasonally appropriate) Sartorialist shots.

The show ends April 26th. Go!

I Love Scandinavians

If it hasn't been made apparent yet, I love them for all their coldness and quirkiness. Lykke Li has stolen my heart with her bun and beautiful song. Is there too much music on this blog lately? It's because all my records are still packed after moving and I have to troll the internet for songs to get me going in the morning!

Dear Gemma,

I saw you at the bodega last night! I am pretty sure you were buying food. Good for you!

The Future of Fashion

Spring Scarves

Yes, yes, we know ethnic prints are in, so let's talk about the best way to incorporate them chicly, without looking like a peace corps kid gone overboard. Spring scarves are a great way to brighten an outfit and make you feel like the sun. You can get gorgeous woven ones, dripping with color, from Go Mama Go! made by a fair trade collective in Nepal (the first two come from there).

Best Band Makeover

pic from their myspace

Glass Candy have left the Shattered Theater, and its post-punk guitars, and re-vamped themselves as disco divas. Their new tracks are totally awesome--not to mention their stylin' update to disco fashion. Somebody book them at Garutachi!

P.S. Are You a Size 6?

Because you should buy these from me:

Let Your Motto Be Your Resistance

Did you miss this amazing and touching exhibit of photographs at the National Portrait Gallery? It's alright, the Smithsonian put it up online too, so you can browse at your leisure. The pics are gorgeous and after seeing them, I immediately went home to google a lot of the subjects that I didn't recognize. Don't hate me because I love learning! I took some photos too:

It-Bags

Ok, so I would never wear anything that was all-over print designer logos. And I am pretty sure I won't ever buy a bag for thousands of dollars because Nicole Richie did--I don't need her to think I am cool. But I do want a beautiful, unique, well-made bag to house all the shit i carry around with me that I don't really need. Here are my faves:

Tila March - are these even available in the US?

Jerome Dreyfuss - You can cop some styles at ShopBop and Mick Margo

Ashley Watson - You've all probably heard of her bags by now, but they're still awesome! At Shop Fatal and Beklina

I'm Back!

Sorry for the absence, but I'm back now. I still love Listopad and you should too!
