Amazing?

Aretha Franklin at the Inauguration via HuffingtonPost.com

I am pretty sure this is as understated as the Queen of Soul gets, which, in itself, is an amazing thing.

And, in unrelated news, Lost returns tonight!....

LL Cool D

Listopad loves cool Diane (Kruger).

(Yahoo! Movies.)

I love how Fashion has been riffing on this jacket for the last five years. It should never go away because it is very cute and flatters many a body. DK is working gray-on-gray so gloriously here, and she gets, like, 100 bonus points for her fishtail braid - one of our current obsessions.

(s/a.)

D (or D's stylist - the identity of whom the Internet has yet to reveal) has discovered what the middle-aged, fun-pursuing women of America have known for a minute now: the combination of red and purple is fucking John Blaze. Seriously: is world domination far behind?

(s/a.)

Cute. Just plain cute. Notice the dainty little bow at the collar! But f. you for those legs, woman.

(s/a.)

I like that she likes gray, stripes, dresses, and being ever-so-slightly tousled. These are all things we like.

(Marie Claire.)

Ok, this outfit is kind of whatevs but she has accessorized it quite nicely. Could just be plain old black dress (for which there is a time and a place, I know), but then you look closer and it's like, bam! Cutest little straw hat. Bam! Small-but-sculptural bracelet. Bam! Karl Lagerfeld. Well played.

(Go Fug Yourself.)

Um. Where can I get literally everything that she is wearing?? Go Fug Yourself needs to cool their jets because this outfit is off. the. chain.

Vintage Maz

Today is a very special day.

Happy birthday, Martha! Like a fine wine, you only get better with age! (Note her prescient Big Love-FLDS steez. I am so into these massive, sculpted waves of hair and the Precious-meets-dowdy vibe. It's so aggressively matronly that it's basically punk.)

Constanzas make me nervous.

You guys remember Bobby Trendy, right?

(Evil Beet Gossip)

He was Anna Nicole Smith's interior decorator.

"I tell other people what is wrong with them—I teach lessons every day." Mr. Trendy bragged of dining nightly on filet mignon; does he fear mad-cow disease? "I repel all diseases."

This quote is from a 2002 NY Observer column penned by the fucking hysterical Simon Doonan after an extensive interview with Trendy (I am trying to be journalistic by using his last name, but ... yeah), in which the decorator drank champagne and "implored the cameraman to 'photograph my beautiful butthole.'"

Please read it!

Olsens!!!

Usmagazine.com has a slideshow: Olsen Twins: 22 Years of Fashion!. (The exclamation points is theirs.) This slideshow is chock-full of awesome outfits, some of which I have never seen before! (It's not like I crazily troll the Internet for pics of them ... or anything ... ahem.)

I will post highlights here.

The print on Ashley's dress looks like illustrations of mitochondria from my grade-school science textbook.

One of my faves. Their bags match each other's outfits.

This pallette? Yes.

Click over to Fashion is Spinach for a link to the WWD Blog interview with the pair -- in which their publicist insisted that they not be referred to as twins. Hmm.

V for Vegan

I just found out that Natalie Portman has a line of vegan shoes. I am digging on a particularly minimal pair of Grecian doodads myself (second row, fourth from left) -- they come in a lovely shade of aubergine! (Make sure to say that in your best Olympia Dukakis drawl.)

(Thanks to Fun Vampires.)

How?!

How? How do you wear black on navy and blow my mind? How do you wear a transparent shirt and not look slutty? How do you get your hair so perfectly fucked up? How!?!?

I will say this: that vast expanse of collarbone is crying out for a necklace. Just a lil' something, you know?

Glorious

I have been trolling the web for weeks looking for a better picture of this outfit, but since it occurred pre-paparazzi-infested awards shows, I don't know if one is going to turn up. The best I could find was this YouTube video. So: here is Diane Keaton accepting an Oscar for Annie Hall in 1978. (Meryl Streep would win the following year for Kramer vs. Kramer. Why do I know this? I am currently writing a paper about Kramer and a post about Meryl-as-Joanna-Kramer's delightfully neutral, nerdy outfits has been brewing in my noggin for a while. Prepare yourself.) I am digressing -- dudes. Look at Diane's freaking outfit. Can you imagine the reactions if someone wore this to an awards show today?

(PS: Last-minute reminder! Ian Svenonius DJs at Bourbon tonight! The tunes will be bumptastic.)

John and Yoko: A New York Love Story

This weekend I had a chance to check out the John and Yoko photo exhibit at Govinda Gallery. The small exhibit of photos by Allen Tannenbaum includes some familiar images of J&Y, as well as some lesser known (to me at least!) photos of John's last live performance. There are some touching photos of the period right after John's death, including a few of Yoko that will be familiar to fans of her music. If you like this fascinating duo, you will surely enjoy the exhibit.

Crazy Chic

2006

Seriously, it can't get any classier than this.

Straight outta Dior Homme.

Lauryn Hill was undoubtedly cool in the '90s but unfortunately, she hasn't transistioned well into the '00s. She's garnered some attention as of late because alleged crazy behavior, and Perez has been keeping us updated here, here and here. Regardless of how she actually is acting (we can't know for sure what is true), this is just one blip in a long line of media frenzy over "crazy" women musicians...it happens to all the greats. The world can't deal with strong women, so they make them out to be insane--that's just how it goes. But anyway, the point is, I hope when I go crazy, I do it in the highly fashionable way she's doing it. Observe:

I swear the Olsens wore this last week.

Remember I told you menswear is back...

Sure, it's a Prince rip-off, but what a great person to rip-off!

Hillary or Bust

Sometimes the most fashion-y attention DC can garner is this. The girls at Jezebel are wondering why Robin Givhan, who won a Pulitzer for her fashion musings, even cares about Hillary's boobs (the article came out a bit ago). Seriously, worrying about boobs on the president is like talking about female presidents' getting PMS and ruining the country. Also, if a woman ever becomes president, I'm sure it will be during her post-menopausal years.
